Chapter 16

Leaning back in his chair, Paul began to yawn.

Taking in a deep breath and holding it briefly, Mrs. Miller turned Paul's way with a pinched face before returning her gaze to the front of the classroom where Martin stood.

“Continue Martin,” Mrs. Miller sighed.

His hands clenched, Martin continued his report on a book that he had been assigned. He spoke only three words when another audible yawn interrupted him. Most eyes faced Paul, but he only smirked as a few classmates began to snicker.

“This is boring,” Henry groaned, letting out his own yawn. “Can’t we move on to the next person?”

“Mr. Wilkerson,” Mrs. Miller sneered, “mind your manners when one of your classmates is speaking! One more outburst and it’s detention!”

“Yes, ma’am,” Henry grumbled.

Once more, Martin attempted his speech only to be interrupted again with another yawn from the left of the classroom. Yet again, everyone faced Paul.

“It wasn’t me,” Paul told the class that began to laugh.

Eyes turned back to the front, then there was another yawn from the right. The game had already begun. The day before, the football players had all agreed to yawn during Martin’s report. Whoever yawned the most before Mrs. Miller said or did anything would win. So far, Henry was ahead four yawns, but was now out of the game.

“If I hear one more yawn, it’s an automatic detention,” Mrs. Miller warned the class, only to get a defiant yawn in return, followed by more snickers.

“That’s a detention, Mr. Allen!”

“It wasn’t me,” one of the jocks protested.

“You too, Ms. Perkins!”

“I didn’t do anything, Mrs. Miller,” Nancy objected. “I didn’t even yawn!”

“You laughed and anyone else who laughs will also get a detention!”

“That’s not fair!”

“Do you want a second?” Mrs. Miller demanded.

Nancy began to sulk in her chair with her arms folded.

After class, Paul waited at the classroom entrance with his head resting against the wall. Nancy was sobbing and complaining to her friends about the unfairness of her detention. Her chest quivering, she stacked her books on top of Paul’s, continuing her sobs.

Mrs. Miller is always ruining our fun, Paul thought. He didn’t get caught, but he didn’t win either. Henry exited the classroom grumbling, but at least he won, meaning each of the jocks had to give him either a smoke or one of their lemon bars from the cafeteria.

Paul began his walk down the crowded hallway, moving between the students. A scrunched paper flew across the hallway.

Unexpectedly, another student was shoved forward, almost losing his grip on the books and papers he was carrying.

“Move,” a voice was heard not so far behind him.

There were some jeers, chuckles, and chattering. Paul turned around to see Martin walking to his next class, until he was not. He had fallen on the floor, attempting to collect himself. Someone shoved him in the rear with their foot, causing him to fall further.

“Idiot!”

“Learn to walk, n*****!”

The cafeteria fared no better with students taking food from Martin’s tray, flinging it off the floor, or using the food to dump on his clothes.
